Getting started with IT: a guide for new students
A warm welcome to the ºÚÁÏÍø! Follow this guide to set up your IT and learn about the main tools and technologies you’ll use at Essex.
Account and password
You get an Essex IT account that you'll use to access services like email and wifi. if you haven't already done so.
Once you have your IT account you can set up MFA (multifactor authentication). MFA adds an extra layer of security when you sign in.
You change your password online if you forget it.
Your Essex email account give you access to your email, contacts, calendar and timetable.
To access your Essex email, go to and sign in using your Essex email address and password.

Microsoft 365
You get free access to the latest Microsoft Office 365 apps like Word, OneDrive, PowerPoint, OneNote and more. You can download Office on up to five of your devices. Your free access ends when you leave Essex.
Campus wifi
Connect to eduroam wifi when you're on campus for free high-speed internet access. Guest wifi is also available.
Software and apps
is our software delivery service. It gives you on-demand access to applications anywhere, and on almost any device.
Campus PCs
We have PCs on campus and you can from the Library.
Print, copy, and scan
You can print, copy, and scan using any of our multifunction devices on campus. You get £10 of virtual credit at the start of each academic year - it's not real money, just a virtual balance.
IT support
Contact our IT Helpdesk if you need IT help and check our for known problems.
Digital skills support is available if you want to develop your IT skills.
Cyber safety
It's important you know how to stay secure online and protect yourself from scams and fraud. Never share your Essex password with anyone.
Learning tools
is the University's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) where you'll find most of your course materials such as your lecture slides, and provides an online space for interactive learning.
(Feedback Assessment Submission Electronic Repository) is the University's online coursework submission, assessment and feedback service.
is the University's lecture capture and playback service. It records your lectures so you can listen back at a time that's convenient to you.
LinkedIn Learning is an online educational platform that helps you discover and develop business, technology-related, and creative skills through expert-led course videos.
