Connecting to eduroam

eduroam (education roaming) is a secure, encrypted wifi network used by universities worldwide.

It's available in teaching spaces, study areas, and most public areas across campus, but not in student accommodation.

We recommend using the geteduroam app — it’s the quickest and easiest way to connect.

  1. Download the  app.
  2. Open it and select ºÚÁÏÍø.
  3. Sign in using your full University username  (for example, abc12345@essex.ac.uk, not abc12345) and your usual Essex password.
  4. Install the profile when prompted — and you’re done.

If the app doesn't work, try , or follow one of our manual setup guides:

Good to know:

  • Once set up, your device will automatically reconnect wherever eduroam is available — on our campuses or when visiting other institutions.
  • By using eduroam you agree to the University’s  and the .

Connecting to Essex Guest

Essex Guest is a free wifi service for visitors who don’t have an Essex or eduroam account.

How to connect:

  1. Join the Essex Guest network.
  2. Enter your personal email address (not @essex.ac.uk).
  3. You’ll receive 10 minutes of immediate access.
  4. For 24 hours of access, verify your email by clicking the link we send you.

If you’re here longer than a day and can’t use eduroam, you can re‑register for another 24 hours when your access expires.

Having trouble connecting?

Try these steps:

  • Check you're using your full University username (for example: ab12345@essex.ac.uk).
  • "Forget network" for eduroam, then reconnect.
  • Restart your phone, tablet, or laptop.
  • If you've recently changed your password, reconnect using your new password.
  • Check your device's date and time are correct (this can affect wifi security certificate checks).
