Change your password

If you’ve forgotten your password, think it’s been compromised, or just want to update it, you can change it online at any time.

You now change or reset your University password through Microsoft’s secure password site.

Use the link below to change your University password.

Enter your username in the format username@essex.ac.uk (for example: ab12345@essex.ac.uk).

Forgotten your password?

If your password isn’t accepted or you’re locked out, don’t worry — most issues can be fixed quickly using Microsoft’s recovery service.

If you’re still unable to recover your account, please contact the IT HelpdeskIT HelpdeskIT Helpdesk for assistance.

Update your account security information

These details verify your identity when you sign in or need to recover your account.

When you should change your password

You should update your password if:

  • you’ve forgotten it
  • you've shared it by mistake
  • you think someone else may know it
  • you’ve been locked out of your account

Password requirements

Your new password must include at least 8 characters (maximum 256) and at least three of the following:

  • lowercase letters
  • uppercase letters
  • numbers (0–9)
  • symbols: @ # $ % ^ & * - _ ! + = [ ] { } | \ : ' , . ? / ` ~ " ( ) ; < >

After you change your password

You may need to sign in again on:

  • eduroam wifi
  • University computers
  • Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Teams, OneDrive)
  • Moodle
  • Your phone and tablet apps
  • VPN
  • Any device where your old password was saved

If you use wifi, you may need to forget eduroam on your device and reconnect with your new password.
