Sanctions are one of the UK Government’s foreign policy tools, used to maintain domestic and international security and peace. Sanctions can be imposed upon individuals and organisations and include arms embargoes, financial restrictions and other restrictions.

Sanctions can affect research projects because the University may be prohibited from sharing funds, providing assistance or collaborating on research with sanctioned entities. Note that sanctions can be changed at any time, and therefore an entity can become sanctioned during the course of a project. Researchers conducting research in volatile regions of the world should pay careful attention to UK Government announcements about sanctions.

The REO Due Diligence Team will check for sanctions during the course of due diligence checks for funded projects, but other kinds of collaborations, such as informal and unfunded collaborations, will require researchers to be aware of sanctions. You can check proposed collaborators against the following lists:

If you need assistance checking these lists or are unsure on how to proceed if a proposed collaborator or their country appears on this list, please contact the Due Diligence Team
