Profile
Biography
Professor Stavroula Karapapa is Dean of Partnerships (Research) and Professor of Intellectual Property and Information Law at the 黑料网. She joined Essex in 2020, following her appointment as Chair of Intellectual Property and Information Law at the University of Reading, where she also served as Executive Director of the Centre of Commercial Law and Financial Regulation. Earlier in her career, she taught at Brunel Law School and was Deputy Director of the Intellectual Property, Internet and Media Research Centre. Prior to entering academia, she practised as a lawyer specialising in intellectual property, commercial, and civil law. Professor Karapapa writes and teaches on the legal regulation of creativity, innovation and cultural production, with particular attention to the challenges posed by digital technologies to existing legal regimes. Her work spans intellectual property law, with a particular focus on copyright, digital rights, data protection and related areas of public and private law, examining how legal frameworks govern creative and cultural practices, mediate technological change, and shape the conditions under which innovation occurs. Her research contributes to understanding how law must evolve in response to digital and cultural transformation, while also critically analysing how legal structures themselves influence and are reshaped by technological and creative developments. Her work is distinctive in its socio-legal and comparative outlook and often involves doctrinal analysis and policy insight at the interface of other disciplines. Her work has been cited in UK Intellectual Property Office draft legislation, Opinions of the Advocate General, and official reports of the European Commission, the Canadian Privacy Commissioner, and the US Copyright Office. Since 2012, she has acted as an expert for the World Intellectual Property Organisation, the European Commission, the European Parliament, the UK Intellectual Property Office, and other international organisations, as well as industry stakeholders. Her work has been supported through funding provided by the European Parliament, the European Commission, Innovate UK, Erasmus+, and the EU Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). 鈥℉er monograph Defences to Copyright Infringement: Creativity, Innovation and Freedom on the Internet (OUP, 2020) develops a systematic theoretical and doctrinal framework for copyright defences and contributes to scholarly and policy debates on copyright balance in digital environments. This builds on earlier work, including Copyright and Mass Digitization (OUP, 2013, with Maurizio Borghi) and Private Copying (Routledge, 2012), which together form a sustained body of research on copyright law and technological change. 鈥 Professor Karapapa has also pioneered the problem-based approach in legal education by having published a textbook on Intellectual Property Law (OUP, 2019, with Luke McDonagh), which encourages students to engage with each topic through relevant, real-world issues and gain insight into how the law interacts with everyday life and business. Professor Karapapa is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy; Editor-in-Chief of the European Trade Mark Reports (Sweet & Maxwell); Correspondent for Kluwer EU Copyright Cases (Kluwer); adjunct Professor at the University of London (PGLaws); Greek-qualified Barrister (Athens Bar - non-practising) and was visiting research fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (2020/21). Professor Karapapa would welcome research proposals in the areas of Intellectual Property Law, Information Law, Digital Regulation, Media Law, Cultural Heritage, and Data Protection.
