Biography
John is a Lecturer in the School of Health and Social Care, where he is a research tutor and supervisor on the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. In June 2024, he was also appointed as the University's service evaluation specialist in health. Primarily a sociologist, John has published his research in leading peer-reviewed journals in the areas of health, families, and sport. John's work on generational changes to children's play has gathered global impact and interest amongst activists for children's independent play, community space designers and psychotherapists. This research was selected and showcased by Wiley Publishers as one of the most impactful pieces of research they have published in the social sciences. His work has received coverage from various media, including news stories in the New York Post, CBC, Fox News and the Daily Mail, as well as featuring as a discussion topic on LBC Radio. John's work has been reported on in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Ukrainian and Russian. His current research focuses on individualisation processes and parenting, especially in relation to tensions between child-parent intimacies and intensive parenting. He is also working on two funded evaluation projects with Home-Start Essex. John was previously the Research Manager at Healthwatch Essex, where studies conducted by the research team that he led were funded by the UKRI, Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust and the National Lottery Community Fund. John has also been commissioned by Essex County Council to develop weight management programmes and by Healthwatch England to deliver qualitative research design sessions for local Healthwatch across England.
