Biography

I received my BA in Arabic Linguistics and Grammar from Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, in 2018. I started working as a teaching assistant in Arabic Linguistics in the College of Arabic Language and Literature at Umm Al-Qura University. I got my MA in Linguistics from Newcastle University in 2021, where I worked mainly on phonology, focusing on L2 and L3 phonological acquisition. I went back to my university and worked as a lecturer in Arabic Linguistics until I started my PhD in 2023, where I shifted more towards Sociolinguistics. My current research involves Arabic Dialectology and Variation and Change, mainly focusing on phonological variation. My ongoing thesis is titled Trajectory of Language Change in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. I have worked on multiple projects aside from my position at Umm Al-Qura. I worked with the Saudi Education and Training Evaluation Commission on national standardised tests in Arabic, as well as working on ongoing project with a non-profit educational organisation on a specialised standard curriculum for teaching Arabic grammar. I have also taught English at the English Language Centre at Umm Al-Qura University.

Research interests

Arabic Linguistics

I am interested in Arabic Dialectology, mainly in Saudi Arabia, focusing on Najdi and Hijazi Arabic varieties. I am also interested in language variation and change, particularly in developing countries and those that have experienced relatively recent economic development. I participate in projects on language teaching, including Arabic and English, motivated by my interest in second language acquisition and phonological perception as a part of the acquisition process.
